2022 05 16

The winners of the drawing competition “Road Safety 2022” initiated by the Lithuanian Road Administration (hereinafter – the Road Administration) have been announced: Fifth grade pupil Austėja Pužauskaitė of Šakiai School “Varpas”, seventh grade pupil Grantas Grudzinskas of Butrimonys gymnasium of the Alytus Region, first grade pupil Kamilė Savickaitė of “Versmes” gymnasium of Taurage region, fourth grade pupil Ugnė Barakauskaitė of Žemaičiu Naumiestis School – kindergarten of the Šilute Region, eighth grade pupil Marija Šmakotinaitė of Panevežys “Šaltinis” Progymnasium, and a pupil Nika Pyrčak of the Visaginas Education Centre.

For the competition, Lithuania was divided into three territories, with two winning drawings in each territory reflecting the theme. By the end of October this year, all the winning drawings will be repainted on the pavilions of the bus stops according to where the winners live.
Around 1,000 drawings were sent to the Road Administration. The most active were primary school children from Panevežys “Šaltinis” Progymnasium, Panevėžys “Saulėtekis” Progymnasium, Visaginas “Verdenė” Gymnasium, Girkalnis Primary School of Raseiniai District, Tauragė Jovarų Primary School, Butrimonys gymnasium of the Alytus Region, Zapyškis Primary School of Kaunas District and Varėna “Ryto” Progymnasium. Their drawings include pedestrian crossings, traffic lights and road signs. Older pupils work on seat belts, safe speed, cycling and road traffic rules.

Remigijus Lipkevičius, the Director of the Road Administration, when speaking about the objectives of the competition, stressed that the main objective of the drawing competition – to remember and repeat the road traffic rules – had been achieved. “We are delighted with every drawing we receive and thank the adults who encouraged the children to take part. It was particularly good to hear that in some schools, before the children started drawing, they talked about safe behaviour on the road, the themes of the drawings and situations on the road. Only by working together and consistently can positive results be achieved. The results of the competition are immeasurable – knowledge, closer community and safer roads,” said the Director.
The winners will be awarded with certificates of appreciation and prizes established by the Road Administration, while the rest of the participants will receive symbolic gifts from the Road Administration.

For the third year in a row, this competition aims to raise road users’ awareness of traffic safety on our roads and streets, to encourage everyone involved to behave responsibly and attentively, to remind pedestrians of the need to wear reflectors, and to remind car drivers of the importance of wearing a seat belt, and to not only be respectful of each other, but also to protect everyone’s health and life.

The judging criteria for the drawing entries are: relevance to the aim and theme of the competition, originality of the idea and form, quality of the entries, potential for practical application, etc. All visual content of the entries had to comply with the requirements of the Road Traffic Regulation. The entries were judged by a jury consisting of the organisers of the competition.

The nationwide competition is open to students from education and training institutions, members of non-governmental organisations and communities.
