Variable Message Signs to Inform About Changes on Highly-Trafficked Via Baltica

2021 09 09

Next year, 25 variable message signs (later – VMS) will be installed on state significance main road A5 Kaunas–Marijampolė–Suwałki. VMS is an indispensable part of the speed control and warning system, which consists of weather sensors registering road pavement condition, temperature, wind strength and other parametres as well as devices of traffic flow analysis.
According to the signed contract, VMS will be mounted on the road A5 Kaunas–Marijampolė– Suwałki section from km 1 to 58. Devices will inform drivers about traffic conditions, speed limit and possible obstacles on a concrete road.

“It would be difficult to imagine a modern road without modern electronic information systems enabling drivers to take safe speed, to foresee possible traffic interferences and other dynamical changes”, Director of the Road Administration Remigijus Lipkevičius says. He points out that such systems will not only ensure safe transportation on highly-trafficked roads, but will save travel time.

VMS operate as video screens displaying speed restriction and warning signs. Road users are provided information about the changing driving conditions. The system collects data from various sensors on the road and take a decision on which road signs shall be displayed on a VMS screen. This way, road users are immediately informed about current traffic conditions.
Road users will find information on the ongoing road works, traffic accidents or any other possible obstacles on the road at the website of the Road Administration www.eismoinfo.lt.

When information has been received, operators from the Information Division enter it manually and road users get the latest information.

The first speed control and warning system was installed in Lithuania near Jakai roundabout  in Klaipėda in 2014. So far 34 speed control and warning systems have been installed in Lithuania.
