The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on November 15

On Sunday November 15, the campaign NEUŽGESK (Keep Sparking) is held to remember the road victims. The campaign aims to draw the road users‘ attention to their responsible behaviour on the road and obeying Road Traffic Regulations in order to avoid meaningless victims.

This year the campaign NEUŽGESK is held in a different manner due to lockdown restrictions, which teach us to communicate at a distance. Therefore, everybody is invited to remember and honour the road victims by marking their websites by a special logo NEUŽGESK (https://lakd.lrv.lt/lt/eismo-sauga/akcija-neuzgesk).

Physical entities may mark their Facebook profile photos with a special profile frame. A social network user will find several frames dedicated to the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims upon entering the key word ‘neužgesk’.

In 2019, 186 people died on Lithuanian roads (158 this year). In 2019 there were 3,200 road accidents with 3,782 injured. According to the updated statistics provided by the Lithuanian Road Police, this year in the period of ten last months 2,572 road accidents occurred, with 2,975 injured and 135 fatalities. One of the main reasons of road traffic accidents was a human factor.

According to the World Health Organization, each year more than 1 million people die, 50 million are injured and a huge number of them become disabled in road accidents on our planet. More than three thousand lives are lost every day.

This year the Day has been commemorated for the fifteenth time in Lithuania as well as in other countries of the world since the United Nations with the support of the World Health Organization adopted a Resolution in 2005, calling  the governments of member countries to dedicate the third Sunday of November each year to remember road victims. In Lithuania the campaign NEUŽGESK is organized by SE Lithuanian Road Administration, the Lithuanian Road Police and the Club of Young Road Engineers ‘Kelelis’.
