The Cathedral Square in Vilnius Will Host All Family Traffic Safety Event

2021 08 16

On Saturday 21 August SE Lithuanian Road Administration invites to attend the annual traffic safety event Be Careful on the Road. The event will be held on the Cathedral Square of Vilnius from 12:00 until 16:00 and all family members are invited to take part in it.

“This annual event is to remind everybody that in order to ensure traffic safety on the road, careful and responsible behaviour of each road user is important. This campaign is targeted at both adults and children since the young are open to acquire new information. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to start educating children in their earliest years”, says the Director of SE Lithuanian Road Administration Remigijus Lipkevičius.

The event will be held before the beginning of the school year when the number of vehicles increases on the streets and roads and the schoolchildren are still absent-minded after their summer vacation. This event is a nice opportunity to remind that road users are different; therefore, in order to avoid serious or deadly accidents all of us should be careful, responsible and reasonable on the road.

Innovative Educational Activities

‘It’s Better to See Something Once Than to Hear About It a Thousand Times’ seems to be the motto of the organizers of the event. They will invite the visitors to join various hands-on activities on safe behaviour on the road.

Children will be able to test an e-vehicle track equipped with road signs. The characters from well-known cartoon movies The Transformers and Paw Patrol will explain the meaning of road signs and the rules of safe behaviour on the road. Children will be invited to visit the zone of reflectors. Senior ones will be able to check their knowledge on traffic safety on the interactive screen or in the orienteering sports competition held during the event. E-scooter riding rules will be presented in detail and pilot riding will be available on a special track. The visitors will have a chance to take the driver‘s seat in a real truck and to evaluate a truck’s no zones in order to understand that over-dimension vehicle drivers may not be able to adequately see other road users.

Special attention will be paid to the prevention of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Drunken busters goggles will be available as well in order to simulate the dangers of drunk driving.

Presentations of Representatives of Institutions in Charge

Special Lithuanian institutions in charge will join the traffic safety event: the representatives from the Lithuanian Police, Emergency Medical Services, Fire and Rescue Services, the State Border Guard Service and the Lithuanian Army. They will present their vehicles equipped with special devices and remind how important it is to behave responsibly on the road.

The spectators will observe the simulated rescue operation: a car fire will be extinguished and the basics of the first aid will be explained. It will remind how important the activities of the institutions in charge are in saving our lives and that we must yield the right-of-way to emergency vehicles that use a siren and flashing lights.

During the event a pop rock music band Justin 3 will give a concert.  Finally, a shocking video will be presented on how lives could be irreversibly changed by just one SMS message and irresponsible driving. Each of us should ask ourselves Is that message so important? when reaching for a smartphone while driving.

We kindly invite all residents and guests of Vilnius to come and visit us on the Cathedral Square of Vilnius at 12.00 on 21 August 2021!

Due to COVID-19 the participants of the campaign are highly recommended to take all necessary precautions and observe regulations issued by the Government of the Lithuanian Republic: to keep safe distance, to avoid pooling, to wear face masks.
