2021 12 27

After the results of the traffic safety project-competition ‘Traffic Safety in Communities 2020-2021‘ (herenafter – the Competition) have been calculated, it turned out that the winner in Group 1 is the public organisation ‘Aušrinė‘ of Šiluva community from Raseiniai district, the winner in Group 2 is the community of Naujieji Elmininkai village from Anykščiai district, the winner in Group 3 is the community of Siesikai town of Ukmergė district, the winner in Group 4 is the community of Gribžiniai village of Klaipėda district, the winner in Group 5 is the Panevezys District Communities Union, that unites as many as seven communities, and the winner in Group 6 is Jonava Justinas Vareikis Progymnasium. The winning communities received the biggest number of votes.

According to Remigijus Lipkevičius, Director of the State Enterprise Lithuanian Road Administration (hereinafter – the Road Administration), this competition is unique in that the participating communities teach the members of their communities to behave safely on the roads, and remind them of the Road Traffic Rules. Such a way of disseminating information is more effective because community members know each other, they know the problems that are most relevant to them.

“This competition is obviously necessary and beneficial to the communities. The contribution of each member of the community to a safer traffic environment is the most important value of this project. We are grateful to the active members of the communities, who are not indifferent not only to their own safety on the road but also to that of other members of the community”, – says the head of the Road Administration.

126 communities uniting 18 thousand members registered for the competition, which took place in 2020-2021. They were divided into six groups. The first four groups consisted of individually participating communities, divided into groups by the number of the members registered in each community. Community associations uniting several communities competed in the fifth group. The sixth group consisted of informal communities.

During the year-long competition, the communities have organised about 370 different events, such as quizzes, competitions, hiking and cycling activities, they talked about traffic safety during the community feasts. In talking about safe traffic, the communities chose the relevant topics: there were talks about safe traffic of scooter and bicycle riders and about the importance of reflectors. It has also been reminded how important is to drive at safe speed, to wear seat belts and to refrain from participating in the traffic while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The importance of being attentive while on the road and respect for other road users have been emphasized. Lectures on the topics of traffic safety were organised for the members of the communities participating in the project.

The events were evaluated according to several criteria: the content and originality of the event, creativity, the ability to gather together first of all the adult community members, to involve in the project the representatives of various socially excluded groups, publicity, cooperation with other organisations, etc.

The traffic safety competition was organised by the Road Administration already for the eleventh time. 23 communities, which have organised about 50 events, took part in the competition of 2010, which was the first competition.
