Speed and Traffic Control Systems Will Be Installed on the Road from Vilnius to Kaunas

Fourty-nine speed and traffic control systems will have been installed on the main road A1 Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda section from Vilnius to Kaunas by September 2021. Works will be performed according to the contract of 9 June 2020 entered between the Lithuanian Road Administration under the Ministry of Transport and Communications (later – the Road Administration) and the Joint Activity Economic Entity Group JSC Maniga and JSC Tiltuva. The Contract price is 4.83 million euros (including VAT).

‘The installation of speed and traffic control systems makes a significant strategic part of the main road A1 Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda reconstruction. It is one of the most heavily trafficked Lithuanian state significance transport arteries. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to provide not only convenient, but safe service on this road’, says Mr Vitalijus Andrejevas, Director of the Road Administration.

Speed and traffic control systems consist of electronic variable message signs (later – VMS), weather sensors, which register road pavement condition, temperature, wind strength and other parametres, as well as transport flow devices, which calculate traffic on concrete road spots.

VMS are one of the key devices of the above-mentioned system, which operate as video screens. They will provide road users with the following information: variable speed limit, warning road signs, changing weather conditions. Based on the obtained data, the systems will take a decision on the recommended speed limit and will immediately inform road users via VMS.

The Traffic Information Centre at the Road Administration will inform road users about road works or other obstacles via VMS at www.eismoinfo.lt

The first such system in Lithuania was installed near the Jakai roundabout in Klaipėda in 2014. According to the data of 2020, 34 speed and traffic control systems have been installed in Lithuania.
