Reconstruction of Main Road A1 Section Vilnius-Kaunas into Motorway To Be Completed by the End of 2021

A1 road Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda section from km 18.1 to km 95 will be classified as motorway when all undergoing and approved works are completed. On separate A1 road Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda sections reconstruction works have already been completed; however, the whole project will be implemented by the end of this year.

Currently, 49 new speed management and warning systems are being installed on the main road A1 Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda section from Vilnius to Kaunas, which comprise variable message signs (later – VMS), weather sensors to register road pavement condition, temperature, wind strength and other parametres as well as other devices to analyze traffic flows on concrete places.

The Traffic Information Centre at SE Lithuanian Road Administration on its website eismoinfo.lt will also inform road users about undergoing works, traffic accidents or other obstacles on the road.

“Installation of speed management and warning systems is a very important part of main road A1 Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda reconstruction plan. The road is one of the most trafficked Lithuanian state transport arteries. Traffic safety measures will facilitate not only convenient, but safe transportation on the road which complies to the requirements set to the motorway”, emphasizes the Director of SE Lithuanian Road Administration Remigijus Lipkevičius.

During reconstruction works carried out on the main road A1 Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda section from Vilnius to Kaunas steel safety barriers on the dividing line were replaced and wildlife barrier fencing was installed. Acceleration and deceleration lanes were reconstructed; pedestrian pathways and grade-separated crossings were constructed; lighting was installed; other works are underway.
The goal of performing reconstruction works on the mentioned section is to satisfy traffic safety requirements as well as conditions complying to the roads with high traffic volumes. Compliance to the set safety and technical requirements enables to introduce the speed limits of 130 km/h  in summer and 110 km/h in winter.
Currently, traffic restrictions on separate sections of this road A1 Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda have been introduced according to the approved and typical traffic organization schemes.
