Reconstruction of Lentvaris Railway Crossing Underway

2021 06 18

SE Lithuanian Road Administration (later – the Road Administration) informs that the reconstruction of Lentvaris railway crossing is partway through. The most complicated works of pushing reinforced concrete tunnel structures under rails have been successfully completed without stopping the movement of trains. The following infrastructure preparation works are underway: the construction of a pedestrian zone in the tunnel, bus and parking lots near an underground crossing, etc.

The tunnel for car drivers and pedestrians is 64 m long, 15.4 m wide and weighs 6,720 tonnes. Such tunnel construction technology when a tunnel is pushed under railway without stopping the movement of trains has been implemented in Lithuania and the Baltic countries for the first time. Special attention has been paid to the infrastructure and safety of pedestrians. Therefore, a 3-metre wide pedestrian zone was constructed in the tunnel.

The bus stop and the parking lot for cars and buses were constructed in Lentvaris, which enabled to use not only public transport but cars as well. It is planned to open the tunnel for vehicles and pedestrians in autumn 2021.

The Director of the Road Administration R. Lipkevičius states that Lentvaris town, which has been divided into two parts by railway, will be connected by a tunnel. The tunnel will improve the movement of local people to work, school, kindergardens, shopping centres as well as those travelling to Vilnius or Trakai.

“The reconstruction of Lentvaris railway level crossing into a modern railway ensures convenient as well as highly safe transportation. The new structure will ensure the safest possible railway crossing conditions for car drivers, bicyclists, pedestrians and will considerably increase the mobility of people with special needs. The reconstructed railway crossing will enable to organize train traffic in the town in order to ensure the lowest noise level and to improve the quality of life,” says Director General Karolis Sankovski of the company LTG Infra AB.

“Lentvaris railway crossing reconstruction is the largest and the most significant project successfully implemented in Trakai district. This railway crossing is one of the most important transport hubs in Lithuania. However, everyday life of local people and visitors depends on intensive railway traffic. Therefore, this project will solve the long-standing problem  and will improve the quality of life of local people. By the way, it has been extremely important that the tunnel construction technology widely used in the world, which has been applied in Lentvaris for the first time, enabled to continue movement of trains. We, therefore, are grateful to the contractors for their well-organized and hard work and the people of Lentvaris for their patience,” says Acting Deputy Mayor Marija Puč.

Lentvaris railway crossing reconstruction project is being implemented by SE Lithuanian Road Administration, Trakai municipality and company Lietuvos geležinkeliai AB.

The total value of works makes up 20.7 million EUR (incl. VAT). The Project is financed from the Road Maintenance and Development Programme and the European Union investment funds.
