Public Procurement Tender on Reconstruction Project Preparation of Shared Use Path in Neringa

SE Lithuanian Road Administration (later – the Road Administration) has invited public procurement tender to design a shared use path Smiltynė–Nida (ca 35 km). It is planned that in 2022 upon completion of design works, a tender to perform construction works will be invited. The path is being maintained by company Kelių Priežiūra until it is reconstructed to meet the requirements of the European cycle route network (later – EuroVelo).

According to the Director of the Road Administration Remigijus Lipkevičius, pedestrian and cycle path Smiltynė–Nida is important to those who choose to travel by bicycles, would it be Neringa inhabitants or a huge number of tourists visiting this unique place in Lithuania.

“Our aim is to construct a modern pedestrian and bicyclist path which would provide safe transportation. The path is part of EuroVelo route and is used not only by local people, but by  international travellers as well. The reconstruction of this path will contribute to ecological sustainability and reduction of greenhouse gas as it will ensure convenient travelling by bicycle from Smiltynė ferry to Nida without motor transport”, said R. Lipkevičius.

Moreover, the shared use path shall satisfy the needs of special transport so that it could be used in case of a natural calamity, e.g. fire.

The path crosses the territory of the National Park; thus the unique ecosystems of the Coronian Spit and the Coronian Lagoon shall be protected. According to the tender requirements, service providers will have to carry out construction, engineering and other investigations, to prepare the technical project of the reconstruction as well as other pertaining documents.

The designing works could be undertaken after signing cooperation agreements with the municipalities of Neringa and Klaipėda. After reconstruction, Klaipėda municipality will be in charge of 850 metres and Neringa municipality 34 – km of the mentioned path.
