Priority List of Rest and Car Parking Areas To Be Equipped With Sanitary Facilities

2021 06 28

The Lithuanian Road Administration (later – the Road Administration) has compiled a priority list of rest and car parking areas to be equipped with sanitary facilities (later – the priority list). Toilets will be constructed and the infrastructure of rest and car parking areas will be reconstructed according to the priority list.

According to the Director of the Road Administration R. Lipkevičius, one of key factors in developing safe and convenient transportation on state signficance roads is a sufficient number and proper condition of rest and car parking areas, which is especially topical during the peak tourist season.

Rest and car parking areas on the main road A1 Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda and Via Baltica with the highest traffic volumes are on the top of the priority list.

Currently, technical specifications on design works are being prepared; whereas construction works should be completed by next year. It is planned to construct modern sanitary facilities with waste-water treatment equipment. According to the Memorandum on upgrading public transport infrastructure and adapting it to the needs of the people with special needs signed by the Road Administration,  sanitary facilities will be adapted to the needs of disabled people.

The condition of each rest or car parking area to be equipped with sanitary facilities will be evaluated  and, if needed, the pavement on the areas will be reconstructed, lighting will be installed and the surrounding area will be tended.

The priority list was compiled according to the developed methodology, the main criteria of which are their location, average annual daily traffic, the distance between the nearest sanitary facilities (available in other rest and car parking areas, petrol stations).

Rest and car parking areas at the state significance roads will be equipped with sanitary facilities according to the priority list and taking into consideration the availability of the Road Maintenance and Development Programme funds.
