Lithuania Will Chair the Baltic Road Association Until 2025

2021 08 26

During the 30th Baltic Road Conference held in Riga this week, SE Lithuanian Road Administration has taken over the chairmanship of the Baltic Road Association from the State-Owned Limited Liability Company Latvian State Roads (Latvijas Valsts ceļi). Lithuania will chair the Association for the period of four years and in 2025 will hand it over to Estonia.

The goal of the Baltic Road Association is to look for cooperation opportunities by conducting common road studies, coordinating the work of technical experts, organizing common seminars and international conferences and working together with other international organizations.

The members of the Association partake in the activities of technical committees when discussing the topical issues of road infrastructure, construction, traffic safety, etc.

According to the Director of SE Lithuanian Road Administration Remigijus Lipkevičius, the committees of strategy, planning, ITS, road research, traffic safety and road maintenance will continue their activities during the period of four coming years.

The Committees will be discussing the issues important to the three member countries, such as the development of international corridors (e.g. Via Baltica), pedestrian and bicycle lane infrastructure, national road network, sharing the principles of road planning, exchanging experience in the implementation of BIM model, speed enforcement, road information systems, open data use, e-vehicle infrastructure, measuring and testing road condition, Vision Zero, road marking, seasonal road maintenance and other emerging issues. It is planned to pay special attention to traffic safety on the roads through the implementation of both engineering and educational projects.

Historically, the cooperation between the three Baltic countries dates back to the year 1927. The first Baltic Road Conference was held in 1932. Since 1989 the Council of the Baltic Road Association has been meeting twice a year. The three countries act on an equal basis and decisions are taken by common consent.
