Lighting on the roads of national importance will be regulated with the help of a modern system

2022 02 11

The last (third) stage of modernization of the lighting of the roads of national importance has been started. During this stage, lighting management and control systems will be installed, and more than 9 thousand luminaire controllers will be installed and integrated into the system.

The lighting management and control system is designed for remote management and control of the lighting systems installed on the roads of national importance (of the individual luminaires, their groups), for the optimal adjustment of the lighting level at a specific location at different times, and thus reduce electricity consumption and operating costs.

According to Remigijus Lipkevičius, Director of the Lithuanian Road Administration, after the implementation of the whole project, up to 2.7 GWh of electricity consumed for lighting of the roads of national importance or 378 thousand euros per year will be saved. And considering the changed electricity prices, more than 500 thousand euros per year would be saved. Investment in the replacement of luminaires should pay off within 4 years of their installation.

Since 2020, the modernization of the lighting of the roads of national significance was implemented in two stages. During this project, the old type lamps were replaced with new LED luminaires. The said modernization will not only bring economic benefits but will also contribute to safer traffic – the possibility to control the new luminaires in real time will enable a much faster detection and rectification of faults.

During the implementation of the stage 1 of the modernization of the lighting of the roads of national importance, more than 3,800 of old luminaires were replaced with LED luminaires, and during the stage 2 – more than 4,500 luminaires were replaced.

Until the start of the modernization of the lighting of the roads of national importance in 2020, there were more than 10,800 luminaires on the Lithuanian roads of national importance, of which only 11.5% were LED luminaires.
