Construction of the Bridge Across the River Neris Started

2020 01 23

The Lithuanian Road Administration under the Ministry of Transport and Communications (hereafter – the Road Administration) has been informed by the contractor that the bridge acros the river Neris had been already started on road A1 Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda. The bridge falls into the territory of the European ecological network Natura 2000, which sets special requirements to the performance of flora and fauna protection works. Works cannot be carried out during the fish spawning and migration period. Therefore, part of the works, such as the construction of access roads at the river Nėris, bridge piles and piers on the riverbed can be performed only in winter time.

During the project implementation, the bridge across the river Neris, the viaduct on Jonava street and a connecting road will be constructed. Different speed traffic flows will be separated since local transport will be directed to the connecting road leading to the Lapės village, and transit traffic will take the motorway. Drivers will be able to use A. Meškinis and Kleboniškis bridges, and warning signs about works underway will be installed.

Completion of the above works is due in 2021 under the contract entered between the Road Administration and the company Kauno tiltai “On the Project Implementation of the Main Road A1 Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda Section from km 99.29 to 100.47 Reconstruction”. The total value of works is 32.34 million EUR incl. VAT.

The structures above and A. Meškinis bridge are the most traffic-loaded road sections in Lithuania (68,000 vehicles per day) and make up part of the Islandijos road project.

It has been estimated that the reconstruction of the whole Islandijos road will increase road traffic throughput and improve road safety, which enables to save up eight million hours of time wasted in traffic jams on this road.
