Another 56 average speed measuring systems operate on the roads of national importance

2021 11 29

Another 56 average speed measuring systems (ASMS) operate on the roads of national importance. Currently, a total of 162 average speed meters operates on the roads of national importance in 81 sections, and 70 instantaneous speed meters, that are arranged at dangerous points. These meters record speed violations, payment of road fee, the validity of roadworthiness test and of motor third party liability insurance. It is planned that next year another 50 ASMSs (100 devices) will be installed on the roads of national importance.

According to Remigijus Lipkevičius, Director of the State Enterprise Lithuanian Road Administration, this is exactly the speed control system that helps not only to shape but also to develop the habit of drivers to drive at a constant safe speed.

“Unlike instantaneous speed meters, which make speed lovers to slow down at a specific problematic place of the road, the average speed measuring systems, which measure the speed on the road sections of several or dozen kilometres, develop a long-term habit of drivers to drive at a safe speed”, – says the head.

R. Lipkevičius reminds that the over speeding usually leads to extremely painful consequences of traffic accidents. Therefore, he urges drivers to follow the Road Traffic Rules, to abide by the instructions of road signs, and to drive at a permissible and safe speed.

Road signs No 636 “Automatic traffic control” inform about the road section on which automatic devices, which record violations of the set speed mode and other infringements, are installed.

The locations of installing speed meters are determined taking into account the criteria that are set out in the methodologies for determining the sequence of installing speed meters, that have been prepared by the Road Administration. The average annual daily traffic intensity and the number of traffic accidents are some of the most important criteria. Sections of the roads of national importance, selected according to established criteria, on which it would be most appropriate, from the point of view of road safety, to install speed control systems, form the priority queue.

Information about the places where speed meters are installed is publicly available on the website of the Road Administration.

The Road Administration, the police and municipalities jointly take care of road safety and implement comprehensive measures that improve traffic safety.
