2020 09 23

Reconstruction works of state significance national road No 163 Ežerė–Mažeikiai section from km 0.00 to km 6.89 have been completed. The implementation of the contract signed between
SE Lithuanian Road Administration (later – the Road Administration) and JSC Žemaitijos keliai will facilitate the inhabitants of Mažeikiai and nearby districts as well as visitors from Latvia to take more convenient trips on the road.

The road pavement of the above-mentioned section has been reconstructed and widened up to 8 m;  the bridge across the Vaidmino Rivulet at 3.94 km has been replaced by a culvert-bridge; the bridge across the Ašva River at km 6.25 has been reconstructed. The project includes the reconstruction and construction of bus stop areas, intersections, exits, culverts, mounting of new road signs, rennovation of engineering networks. The total value of works makes up almost 3.9 million euros.

To mark the significance of this important transport artery connecting two countries, a symbolic opening ceremony of the reconstructed road section was held on 17 September 2020. The representatives from the Road Administration, Mažeikiai district municipality and JSC Žemaitijos keliai took part in this important event.

This almost  7 km long road section is part of the Interreg V-A Latvia – Lithuania Programme 2014-2020 project Improvement of Cross Border Road Infrastructure for Well Connected Regional Centers and Facilitated Labour Mobility in the Border Areas (later – the Project).
The goal of the Project is to promote workers‘ mobility and geographical integrity on the Lithuanian-Latvian border areas. It aims to develop proper infrastructure for the facilitated mobility of labour force, goods and services and to decrease such long-term regional development obstacles as low quality of the road network, etc.

To attain the set ends, almost 46 km of roads are under reconstruction on the Lithuanian-Latvian border areas.

The Project is being implemented in cooperation between the Road Administration and the Latvian Ministry of Transport, represented by SJSC Latvian State Roads.
In 2014–2020 nine million euros of the European Regional Development Fund were allocated for Interreg V-A Latvian and Lithuanian programme Project implementation, out of which 4.5 million euros for Lithuania.
