70 New Generation Speed Cameras Installed on State Roads

2021 01 11

Seventy instant speed cameras (ISC) installed on the Lithuanian state significance road network register the speed of vehicles driving in both directions, the validity of vehicle‘s technical inspection, civil liability insurance and road user charge payment.

According to the Director of SE Lithuanian Road Administration Remigijus Lipkevičius, the installation of ISC network does not aim to fine road users. The key goal is to ensure traffic safety by reducing the number of severe road accidents, to encourage drivers‘ mindful behaviour and to observe the speed limit.

In most cases ISC are installed in places with a higher accident probability, e,g, in built-up areas near schools, pedestrian crossings or intersections, near educational institutions, places of worship, dangerous intersections, pedestrian crossings as well as other significant objects where regular pedestrian and (or) cyclist flows are expected. The devices make drivers stop at a certain place and reduce the risk of accidents.

In addition to the seventy ISC mentioned-above, currently, 50 average speed camera systems (ASCS) (on 25 road sections) operate on the Lithuanian state significance roads. According to the contracts implemented by SE Lithuanian Road Administration, another 106 ASCS sections (i. e. 212 devices) will be gradually installed.

Location and terms of speed cameras can be found at:

Both ISC and ASCS are installed following the methodologies developed by SE Lithuanian Road Administration. The priorities are set according to the criteria defined in the methodologies, the key criteria being average annual daily traffic volumes and the number of accidents.

Exceeding the speed limit is one of the most severe causes of accidents on the road. According to the preliminary data, ca 70 per cent of road accidents occur due to exceeding the permitted speed limit. Consistent and integrated implementation of traffic safety measures in cooperation with the Lithuanian Road Police, the Lithuanian Transport Safety Administration and municipalities contribute a lot to the improvement of the situation on the roads.
